What Is a Readability Checker?
A readability checker estimates how easy your text is to read, using formulas based on sentence length and word length. The best known are the Flesch Reading Ease score (0–100, higher is easier) and the Flesch-Kincaid grade level (the US school grade needed to follow the text).
This checker calculates both, plus average sentence length and reading time, and highlights long sentences, possible passive voice, adverbs and complex words right in your text, so you can see exactly what to simplify. Everything runs in your browser.
How to Check Readability
- Step 1
Paste your text
Use at least a few paragraphs for a meaningful score.
- Step 2
Read the scores
Flesch score and grade level show overall difficulty; the lists show specific problems.
- Step 3
Fix the highlights
Split red and yellow sentences, rewrite passive sentences in active voice, and swap complex words for simple ones.

Readability Mistakes
Long, multi-clause sentences
Fix: Split them. One idea per sentence.
Too much passive voice
Fix: Say who does what: “We send the invoice”, not “The invoice is sent”.
Jargon without explanation
Fix: Use the simple word, or explain the technical one the first time.
Walls of text
Fix: Use short paragraphs, headings and lists so readers can scan.
Tips
Write for scanning
Read it out loud
Don’t over-simplify expert content
Questions about the Readability Checker
What is a good Flesch Reading Ease score?
For most web content, 60 or higher (plain English). Very technical content can reasonably score lower.
Does readability affect Google rankings?
Google doesn’t use a readability score. Clear writing does help visitors understand and stay, which supports your goals.
How accurate is passive voice detection?
It’s pattern-based and flags possible passive sentences. Review each highlight yourself.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The analysis runs entirely in your browser.
Does it work for other languages?
The formulas are designed for English. Scores for other languages are only rough guides.
